Toronto Literary Agent and Rights & Contracts legal expert Marilyn Biderman will discuss what it takes to get a book contract and how to ensure you get a fair deal with a publisher. Q & A to follow.

After 12 years with McClelland & Stewart, Marilyn Biderman recently left her position as Vice President, Rights & Contracts, to found her own literary agency, Marilyn Biderman Literary Management. She has taught at the publishing programs at Ryerson University, Simon Fraser University, Humber College, and Centennial College. Marilyn is also a lawyer, and the author of several papers on copyright law.

Have you ever wanted to be a technical writer? A proposal writer? A ghost writer?

Attend our spring seminar where guest panellists Kerry Surman, Heidi Lasi and Karen Opas-Lanouette will show you how!

Kerry Surman teaches editing, usability, and document planning and management in the Technical Writer graduate certificate program at Algonquin College. She has worked in technical writing, training, communications, and human resources for a variety of employers and is co-author of the first Canadian edition of Technical Communication: A Reader-Centred Approach. Kerry will be presenting an overview of technical writing.

Heidi Lasi is an award-winning producer, director and writer with more than 20 years of experience in communications. She has worked with the private, public and non-profit sectors on a variety of projects and has written and co-written successful proposals to foundations, corporations and government agencies. Heidi will be discussing everything you need to know about writing an effective proposal.

Karen Opas-Lanouette is an experienced writer and editor-in-chief at Partner Publishing. She is also a seasoned ghostwriter who, over the past three years, has ghostwritten five non-fiction books and is currently ghostwriting two more. Karen will be discussing the ins and outs of the ghostwriting profession, including how to earn a living as an invisible writer.

PWAC Ottawa is hosting a seminar, open to members and non-members, on how to start your freelance writing business. The two-hour seminar features guest panellists Christine LeBlanc, an experienced communications consultant, and Suzanne Bowness, an established freelance writer and editor who has designed websites for many writers and editors.
